If you hold one of qualifications listed below you are eligible to work in New Zealand as a locum tenens specialist in general medicine for up to twelve months. You are also eligible to apply for vocational registration, which has no restriction on the time you can work in New Zealand.  However, qualification criteria can change at the discretion of the New Zealand Medical Council at any time. The approved specialist qualifications in Medicine are:

​For sub-specialties you will need to hold also the relevant specialist qualification for your sub-specialty.

Doctors who hold a specialist qualification in internal medicine, but not one of those listed above may still be eligible to apply for vocational registration in New Zealand at consultant level.

Doctors without vocational qualifications, but who have worked in internal medicine for a minimum of 30 hours per week for at least 33 out of the last 48 months in one of the following comparable health countries, are eligible to work in New Zealand at Medical Officer of Specialist Scale (MOSS) or registrar level, depending on your level of training and experience.

Comparable Health System countries are:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Norway, Republic of Ireland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, United States of America.
